Connecting
- Always connect to Ford Library and Duke Libraries databases from our database pages, or from within the Duke Libraries MetaLib portal.
- Don't browse directly to a database web site and try to login there unless you've been issued an account on that database. Only two databases (Frost & Sullivan and Forrester Research) require separate accounts.
- You don't need separate usernames and passwords for Library databases. If you follow a link directly from our database pages, you'll either be connected automatically, or asked to enter your Duke NetID and password.
Passwords
- If you follow a link to a database and receive a password prompt, the screen you see should look like this:

or this:

Enter your Duke NetID and password in whichever of these login methods appears.
Browser Add-Ons & Cookies
- If you've installed additional toolbars (e.g. Google or Yahoo) in your web browser some of their features may disrupt your access to Library databases. Please disable or un-install Google Web Accelerator, and disable the pop-up blockers built into the Yahoo and Google toolbars.
- Your browser must be set to allow pop-ups from many of our database sites, and to allow cookies that come from the database site (1st party cookies).
Trying Again
- If you've mistakenly entered login information at a database site, or lose your connection for some other reason, you should clear your browser's cache and cookies before re-trying your access to a database site from our web pages.
- To clear your browser cache and cookies in MS Internet Explorer 7: choose Tools...Delete Browsing History....Delete Files, and ...Delete Cookies.
- To clear your browser cache and cookies in MS Internet Explorer 6: choose Tools...Internet Options (General tab)....Delete Temporary Internet Files, and ....Delete Cookies.
- To clear your browser cache in Firefox: press Shift+Ctrl+Del, check the "Clear Cache" and "Clear Cookies" boxes, (uncheck the other boxes!), and then click the "Clear Private Data" button.
Firewalls & VPN
- Some firewalls and browsers may be set by default to block referring URLs. This will cause your connection to some of our databases to fail. Please click HERE to see if referring URLs are being blocked on your computer.
- Some firewalls may also disrupt your access to the Vault Career Guides. More information is here.
- Some databases and all of our e-journals and e-reserves require the Fuqua VPN client if you want to access those resources from off-campus. If you follow a link to a database and see this error page, please enable your VPN client.
- In many cases, you won't be able to access VPN databases, e-journals, or e-reserves if you are connected to the internet via a corporate or business network. These networks often have server firewalls that disrupt VPN authentication.
Report Your Problem
If you still cannot access a particular database after trying the tips above, please send an email to reference-librarians@fuqua.duke.edu that includes the following information:
a) the name of the database
b) where in the access process you received an error message or login screen. I.e. you received an error at the database web site, or you received a login screen or error message before you reached the database.
c) Please include the information between the horizontal bars below, and an attached screenshot or the full text of the error message or login screen with your eMail.
